Start the New Year outside with us!
We’re leading a free family-friendly hike on Jan. 1 at Turkey Creek Nature Preserve from 10am-12pm. The trail route will be mostly flat with some inclines and suitable for all-ages.
Space is limited to 20 parking spots at Turkey Creek if you’d like to carpool. Be sure to wear sturdy walking shoes, warm layers, and bring your own water.
After the hike, all are invited to warm up with some hot chocolate.

Women's Only Chainsaw Academy Spring 2023
When: April 1 & 2, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. both days
Where: F.W. Kent Park (in-class) | Bur Oak Land Trust’s Belgum Grove
Why: Safe, inclusive space for those who identify as women. Learn chainsaw skills and how to safely operate a saw for personal use.
Registration is $50. Scholarships may be available to reduce participant cost (contact firstname.lastname@example.org for inquiry). Refunds will only be issued if the class is cancelled. Registration link coming soon.
The Chainsaw Academy is an educational series, teaching safety and competency skills for personal chainsaw use. The level one, two-day course is a mix of in-class instruction and field skill-building including the following topics: chainsaw safety, maintenance, starting a saw, basic limbing, bucking, and swamping. Bur Oak Land Trust staff and AmeriCorps members will serve as course instructors.
Specific topics covered in class:
- Safely carrying, holding, and cutting with a saw
- PPE requirements
- Bar and chain maintenance: replacing chain, sharpening, and tensioning
- Safely starting a saw
- Recognizing hazards
- Recognizing binds and how to get a saw unstuck
Participants must attend both days to complete the course.
