Call in Your Burn

Call in Your Burn

Last Friday evening, Jason Taylor and I were wrapping up the burn on my little home prairie, when the sheriff stopped by. A passing motorist had seen the flames, and had not seen us loitering around them, and had called 911. The sheriff was the first on the scene and once assured it was well controlled, called in to cancel the mobilization of the Oxford Fire Department.

Apparently, this happens all too often and the sheriff mentioned that he would greatly appreciate it if folks would call in their intentions in advance to Johnson County Dispatch, 319-356-6800, and give them a contact phone number and a burning address. Then if they get a fire reported near there, they can call back to find out whether it is actually an emergency. This is certainly a reasonable request and I am happy to forward the phone number to you. If you are outside Johnson County, perhaps you can call your local 911 and they will relay the message or give you your county’s dispatch phone number.
