Members of the Bur Oak Land Trust AmeriCorps Program are essential to the management and restoration of Bur Oak Land Trust properties and other protected properties the land trust serves in eastern Iowa. Field Crew Members will serve on a 4-member crew led by two Field Crew Leaders to train and use a variety of land management techniques to restore native habitat and remove invasive plant species including prescribed fire, chainsaws and other tools to contribute to the overall biological health of area lands. Mapping and Monitoring Coordinator collaborates with the AmeriCorps Mapping Specialist to expand Bur Oak’s land mapping and monitoring capabilities. These positions use aerial techology and ArcGIS software to help determine future project locations, types of treatment in those locations and effectiveness of treatment.

TIME INVESTMENT

The service term for full-time positions is 12 months, with a typical service schedule of 40 hours per week in the field (crew positions) and in the office (mapping positions), Monday through Friday. Full-time positions start in September and end the following August. Members in full-time positions are responsible for serving a minimum of 1,700 hours, completing required service tasks, and serving hours until August to successfully complete their terms.

Each crew member will choose a training track during the term: Data Collection and Analysis, Environmental Education or Disaster Response. Tracks may include some of the following training programs:

  • S-130/S-190 Firefighter Certification
  • CPR/First Aid Certification
  • ATV Training
  • Part 107 Drone Pilot Certification
  • Fire Ecology Training
  • Interpretive Guide Certification
  • GPS and Electronic Data Collection Devices
  • Small Engine Repair and Equipment Maintenance
  • Leave-No-Trace and “Authority of the Resource”
  • Land Management Plans
  • Document Training
  • Wilderness First Aid

The Mapping and Monitoring Coordinator will receive the following training:

  • Part 107 Drone Pilot Certification
  • S-130/S-190 Firefighter Certification
  • CPR/First Aid Certification
  • Fire Ecology Training
  • GPS and Electronic Data Collection Devices
  • Land Management Plans

AMERICORPS TEAM

Through the Bur Oak Land Trust AmeriCorps program, members serve year-round to improve Iowa’s lands and ecosystems to encourage continued care for nature and strengthen community connections to the outdoors.

These dedicated individuals provide invaluable services for the outdoors on Bur Oak preserves, and lands within Johnson County and throughout eastern Iowa. Members receive a monthly stipend, training, certifications, networking opportunities and critical field experience.

Since 2019, the AmeriCorps program has enrolled 60+ members who completed more than 55,000 hours of service, served in 19 Iowa counties, and improved more than 400 acres of land per year.
