Leveraging Connections to Further Our Conservation Mission

Recently I was reminded – again – of the power of connections. Bur Oak Land Trust has during its tenure built within its mission statement the underlying idea of connections to further the trust’s conservation efforts. Our current mission is no exception: To protect and conserve natural areas to enrich and engage current and future generations.

Leveraging Connections to Further Our Conservation Mission

Generations enjoying Music on the Prairie and tacos.

What brought me back to connections was the conversation – although short – with Ryan, Vesta’s new chef, who came out to our 6th annual Music on the Prairie concert held at Belgum Grove July 6th. Vesta became our food vendor for the event, serving delicious tacos, and we are grateful for their response to help when our original food vendor was no longer able to fulfill their commitment.

What inspired Ryan to be willing to help was in part because more than ten years earlier he had the opportunity to participate in a workday at Belgum Grove. He said that it was an impactful experience and he felt it was an honor to come back as a chef and help our organization.

Engaging with our community by holding volunteer workdays, giving conservation talks to schools, organizations, and businesses, working with AmeriCorps members, holding our Prairie Preview, Family Days, Music on the Prairie, and Cider Moon events, and reaching out through sponsorship partnerships are all parts of one whole. It’s conservation through community engagement.
