Resilience in Nature and in Life
I’ve been thinking a lot about resilience lately – this year to me has been one emotional upheaval after another in just about every arena of life and what I’ve found is that the only way to keep moving forward and not getting bogged down in an overwhelming feeling of helplessness is by cultivating resilience.
This is so applicable both in life and in environmental conservation. Cultivating resilience in nature may mean reseeding native prairie, which have significantly deeper root systems that help the plants weather drought, fire, and greater temperature fluctuations. All of which we are seeing more of around the country with the effects of climate change. It may also means planting native trees that are able to withstand these same effects. Strong land stewardship by our property stewardship specialist, our volunteer property stewards, and our many volunteers helps with that mission of resilience – so that we can continue to protect and conserve the natural areas in and around Johnson County for future generations.
As we look back on 2017 and look forward to new beginnings in 2018, I encourage you to think about resilience in your own life. Get outside, connect with nature, and put down your own resilient roots. Wishing you a Happy New Year!
